WE CARRY THE TOP AMMUNITION ON THE MARKET

How can you find the best ammunition for you? The answer to this question depends heavily on the type of gun you own, the kind of shooting you will do, your local laws and to some extent your budget.

Many experienced shooters claim that the most effective method to find the perfect ammo for any firearm is by trial and error. They say that a gun can function with great reliability and accuracy if it “likes” the ammunition loaded into it. This statement is especially true of semi-automatic guns.

If you have a gun that is new to you, I suggest calling your gun's manufacturer and ask them what ammo they recommend. There are also many shooting forums online that discuss the subject of ammunition. The forums can be great, but be prepared to use your own judgment as some people post info that is just plain wrong.

Here's some general guidelines for ammo selection:

Handguns

For personal protection, be prepared to spend some money on good quality ammo specifically designed for personal protection. Most will be hollow points with a bullet weight that is appropriate for the job. Make sure to shoot a decent number of rounds (at least 100 for semi-auto's) through your handgun to make sure the ammo works well with your gun. The ammo you choose must not jam the gun or miss-fire when you need it most.

After you know for sure the personal protection ammo you will use, you can buy less expensive ammo of the same bullet weight to practice with.

For competitive target shooting there are 'premium' quality rounds available from all the big manufacturers.

There is a huge selection of handgun ammo for the popular calibers if you just want to go shoot for fun.

Rifles

Many manufacturers make rifle ammo specifically for certain tasks: precision target shooting, plinking, or specifically for hunting different sized game. Each rifle caliber can have an enormous selection of bullet designs and weights and that can be confusing to new shooters. For instance, you would not want to use a 55 grain .243 bullet meant for coyotes on a deer. The websites of all the major ammo manufacturers do a real good job describing what a specific bullet is meant to do. Take advantage of that free information to select what is the right ammo for you.

Shotguns

One thing to be very careful of is the spreading “No Lead” requirements for shotguns. Be sure to read your state’s laws concerning the type of shot allowed for the game you will be hunting. Many areas do not allow lead for waterfowl hunting, and some newer laws prohibit the use of lead for upland game as well. There is now a variety of good non-lead shot shells available (at higher prices than lead shot) so these laws should not keep your from hunting.

The no-lead law requirement has extended in some states to rifled slugs. If you will be deer hunting make sure you know the laws in your area.

Using a shot-gun for in-home personal defense has become quite popular. Typical 00 buck shot is preferred by many people as the load of choice. Some prefer BB or #2 shot to reduce the risk of ‘friendly fire’… large shot going through walls.
